By German López for Vox. Under federal law, marijuana and heroin share the same legal, regulatory classification: Schedule 1. It’s a surprising fact — one that’s often cited by marijuana legalization advocates to demonstrate how bizarre US drug policy can appear.
That could soon change. This week, in a letter to Sen. Elizabeth Warren, the Drug Enforcement Administration said it hopes to finalize a review of marijuana’s schedule in the first half of 2016. This isn’t the first time the DEA has taken such a review, but legalization advocates are optimistic this could be the review to finally result in a change in pot’s schedule.
